Do you accept Insurance?

Please check with your insurance provider to ask if they allow for out-of-network sessions. Licensed Arts Therapists provide psychotherapy services that can be considered an out-of-network "behavioral health" or "mental health" benefit, depending on your coverage.  I provide an invoice at the end of the month for you to submit to your insurance company for direct reimbursement. Each state in the US has it’s own regulations regarding art therapy licensure which influences whether or not your insurance will cover art therapy sessions. My license covers working with individuals residing in Washington, D.C. Please be aware that many health insurance companies do not yet cover art therapy, though that is a work in progress and its always worth asking. You can also check if you can use your HSA (Health Savings Account) to pay for sessions. I encourage you to make an informed financial decision, and check with your provider prior to your first session.

What questions should I ask my insurance provider?

To make an informed financial decision, it is important to clarify your out-of-network coverage with your insurance provider. I am here to support you and ensure you have all the information you need.

Questions to ask your insurer:

• Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?

• Will you cover ATR-BC’s (art therapist registered, board certified) for psychotherapy (CPT code 90837)?

• How much is my deductible?

• How many visits per year are covered?

I can also provide you with a Support Letter for Art Therapy Reimbursement to give to your insurance provider. Advocacy efforts like this can potentially lead to expansions in benefits coverage as insurance companies learn more about the value of evidence-based art therapy services.

What are the fees for art therapy sessions?

Out-of-network individual therapy sessions cost $200 per visit.

Do you offer a sliding scale?

In an effort to make art therapy more accessible, Aligned Art Therapy reserves a limited number of sliding-scale online individual art therapy sessions for refugees, asylum seekers, queer youth, and those earning at or below minimum wage. I believe that art therapy has a commitment to social justice and that everyone should have the opportunity to experience its transformative possibilities.

How often will we meet? How many sessions will i need?

I strongly suggest once a week individual art therapy sessions to get the most benefits from your art therapy sessions. Sessions are generally 50 minutes long. Together we can discuss your potential length of treatment based on your individual goals and needs.

Can we meet in person?

Currently, I am only taking clients online. In-person sessions may be available in the future, but for now we will meet virtually.

Can we work together if I don’t want to make art during sessions? Do you offer regular talk therapy sessions?

I offer talk therapy for those who prefer not to use art in their sessions, either occasionally or all the time. Art therapists are trained in both psychotherapy and art therapy, making them well-equipped to do both.

Where is your office located?

I am located in Washington D.C., and am currently only offering virtual art therapy sessions.

What is art therapy?

Art therapy is an expressive and specialized form of therapy utilizing the creative process and the different characteristics of art materials to explore emotions, build resilience, and alleviate stress, among many other benefits. Within the context of a therapeutic relationship, art therapy emphasizes the process of art making and the client’s relationship to their art, rather than the quality of the art product. No art experience is necessary to benefit from art therapy. Art therapy blends theories from psychology with creative expression to help individuals improve their well being.

What if I’m “bad” at art? Do I need to be an artist to benefit from art therapy?

No artistic skills are necessary! If fact, there may even be times when you make “ugly” art on purpose. Art therapy focuses on the creative process, not the end result, allowing individuals to express themselves in different ways that don’t necessarily rely on words. I will also show you many different art techniques and ways you can use your art materials during our sessions.

We will also discuss ways you can make sure you have privacy if you live with others. I adhere to the rigorous ethical guidelines outlined by the Art Therapy Credentialing Board (ATCB). I take your privacy very seriously.
